(English text below)

With these words we were greeted at the event on Sunday. The end of the workshop was an opportunity to reward all children with the applause of their parents, teachers, organizers of the workshop, and even the director of the Department of Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon University, who attended the event . And for a good reason. For nearly an hour, participants in the workshop gave us samples of their undeniable talent and work all along this term. With Nelly, one of their teachers, playing radio host, attendees could see pictures and hear a selection of recordings made during the semester. As a complement, the kids performed a live radio program, consisting of jokes, riddles, and interviews with those present. The afternoon was full of smiles and laughter, admiration and appreciation, and much sense of pride in the work of these kids. Finally, each member of the workshop received a certificate of participation and CDs with recordings made throughout the semester were given out. The volunteer assistants, the artistic director and the teachers also received special recognition for their work, support and leadership. The event ended with a brief reception in honor of the kids, in which all ate cookies and drank juice.

In summary, we can say without a doubt that it was a very productive workshop, and that the work done by the children will stay in our memories for a long time (but we can also listen via the links on the blog to their podcasts).

We will be in touch shortly to ask parents and mothers of the participants to help us evaluate the workshop through a brief survey. We will also contact them to share details of our next workshop, which will begin in late January and early February, and in which participants will develop their own youth newspaper/magazine to share with others within the Hispanic community.

Thank you very much a tod@ s for your cooperation and commitment, without which it would not have been possible to conduct this workshop. As an entirely volunteer organization, we can not function without your help, and we greatly appreciate everything you do.

Entrevistas

Visita a WRCT

(English text below)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Sunday Nov. 8, not quite as high on sugar as the previous Halloween weekend, the kids visited Carnegie Mellon University's radio station, WRCT. This station, entirely run by volunteer students, faculty, and staff from the university, and also open to community members who have no affiliation with the university, started broadcasting 50 years ago, and is therefore the oldest station of this type in the US. Currently, WRCT transmits to a radio of 15 (and up to 25) miles through the 88.3 MHz FM, and also to the world through wrct.org on the internet.
Not only does WRCT maintain the space through which the Spanish radio hour, Barrio Latino, is broadcast every Thursday at 6pm, but it also has Juan Fernández among its current members. Juan was generous enough to take the kids on a Spanish-language tour through the station's facilitie. Our young amateur radioists were visibly interested in the equipment, and especially in the giant record and music collection. After witnessing how a live show was being broadcast, and getting acquainted with and asking questions about the "antediluvian" technology of the vynil LP records, they went ahead and learned a bit how to play it with a turntable, and how to create "scratching" effects, play the record at different speeds and in different directions, etc. Special thanks also to our volunteer assistant Carlin for helping coordinate the visit. To see some pictures of the facilities and the music colection, you may click here.
At the end, the kids prepared and posed questions to a "mysterious guest" in order to guess which Spanish-speaking country she came from. For many reasons, it was a memorable session.
For next session, kids will interview briefly in Spanish one of their parents (or an adult relative) using questions similar to those they prepared for the mysteious guest, but referred to the childhood of the interviewee, in order to learn about that past time. We ask parents to help them prepare 3-5 questions like, for instance, "¿What type of food/music/sports/books did you like when you were a child?" or "How did you dress?" If at all possible, each child can record the interview at home on the computer or a voice recorder. They can bring the analog or digital recording or send it electronically to Nelly Juarez (click). Otherwise, they can write questions and answers in their notebooks with an adult' help if necessary.
Many thanks to Ashley's familiy for offering to bring the snack once again. We are in need of volunteers to contribute with the snack for the two last sessions (Nov. 22 & Dec. 6). If interested, you may talk to one of us on Sunday or sign up at
See you soon!
Domingo 1 de noviembre: Programa cómico de concurso
(English text below)
El domingo 1ro de noviembre los chicos compartieron con la clase distintos chistes y adivinanzas. Nos divertimos haciendo nuestro propio concurso radial de adivinanzas en la clase, pero esta vez con la maestra como locutora y los chicos como participantes, entre los cuales destacó Oscar al adivinar en útlimo momento la misteriosa adivinanza! Luego nos dividimos en dos grupos, los cuales crearon su propia mímica de un concurso radial que pueden escuchar en el podcast .
Así lo describieron algunos de ellos:
Hoy en Radiociclón hicimos--
Jamil: una adivinanza
Ceu: fui el ganador de la adivinanza que Oscar hizo en Radiociclón
Oscar: fui el conductor del programa , en el que participaron Jamil, Ceu, Oscar y Sam
La adivinanza fue: "¿qué es grande, rojo y come rocas?"
Por si no saben, es un come rocas grande y rojo!!
Este es un chiste que nos sabemos:
"Que dijo un gorro al otro gorro?
Tú te quedas aquí, yo me voy a ir a la cabeza"
La próxima semana haremos una visita a WRCT, estación radial localizada en las cercanías de Carnegie Mellon University, donde los chicos podrán vivir la experiencia de conocer una cabina de radio y cómo esta funciona en tiempo real.
Gracias a Kenya por ofrecer traer la merienda para l@s chic@s. Hasta la próxima!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Sunday 1 November, the boys shared with the class different jokes and riddles. We had fun making our own radio contest of riddles in the classroom, but this time with the teacher as an announcer and children as participants. Oscar guessed the mysterious riddle! We formed two groups, which created their own charade of a radio contest which can be heard on the podcast.

Here's how some of them described it:

Today in Radiociclón we recorded--
Jamil: a riddle
Ceu: I was the winner of the riddle that Oscar did in Radiociclón
Oscar: I was the host, involving Jamil, Ceu, Oscar and Sam
The riddle was: "What is big, red and eats rocks?"

In case you do not know, it's a big red rock eater!

This is a joke that we know:

"What did a cap say to another cap?
You stay here, I'm going to go on ahead"

Next week we will visit WRCT, a radio station located in Carnegie Mellon University, where kids can experience knowing a radio booth and how it works in real time.

Thanks to Kenya for offering to bring the snack for l@ s chic@ s. Until next time!

On Sunday 10/25, parents had a productive meeting to evaluate and discuss what the kids are accomplishing and to propose goals and make suggestions for future workshops. Thanks to all who came and participated!

In the meantime, the children created their own commercial spots for favorite toys and/or objects. You may hear the podcast with their work through the link provided on the blog . They do enjoy reading the comments that listeners leave for them, so please feel free to leave some encouraging remarks in recognition of their work.

5th mini project Presentation:

Sunday 1st November

Ask parents, friends, and relatives to tell you a joke or a riddle in Spanish. Choose one joke and one riddle among these to share with your friends, assistants, and teachers at the workshop. Be ready also to create with them a short and funny gameshow program.

Note: Teachers have invited kids to come in costume if they want to do it. Please note this Sunday will be part of “homecoming” weekend, and for this reason it might be harder than usual to find a parking spot.

Radio dramas

(English text below)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Sunday 10/11, the children created their own mini-radio dramas. They wrote a short script of a story in which different characters recreated the action. The kids were in charge of representing these characters with their voices. When necessary, they also created sound effects with his voice to make the story more real. The activity was done in small groups and each assistant helped with the creation of the script and the preparation of the recording. We emphasized the phonetics and the characterization, changing tones of voice. Some examples from the Internet that were used as models can be heard here. Check the blog for examples created by the children, available soon.
Remember that Circulo Juvenil is also on Facebook and Twitter, and would be happy to befriend those of you who have a presence in these social networks.
3rd mini project Presentation:
Sunday 18th October
Bring a piece of national news (from the U.S.) and tell the class about it. The news can be taken from a newspaper or news program and hopefully the content is something that interests the girl or boy (maybe news related to sports, music, entertainment, or even to science, space, animals , etc.). Parents will help the child narrate in her/his own words, writing it down, and preparing to present it to his friends on Sunday. The teacher suggested as an example to follow this format:
a description of the event
who (is) are involved
when
Where
Why did you choose this news?
Thanks to Gian Carlo's family for offering to bring the snack for the kids next session.
Radiociclón sale con todo!
Radiociclón, el taller de radio joven, inició con gran alegría y entusaisamo este pasado 27 de septiembre . Luego de una breve presentación en la que niños, maestras y ayudantes se presentaron, charlaron un poco sobre lo que conocían de la radio:
¿Cómo nació?
¿Cuál es su uso/propósito?
¿Cuál es su relevancia actual?
Luego, los chicos crearon una mini entrevista de presentación entre ellos con lan ayuda de los asistentes y se prepararon para grabarla en nuestro Laboratorio, donde conocieron el software y hardware que van a estar utilizando para hacer y revisar pequeñas grabaciones.
Para la semana entrante, cada un@ va a traer una canción en español (grabación cantada por el artista) y aprendérsela para presentarla a los demás imaginando que están haciéndolo para la radio. Hablarán brevemente sobre el contenido, artista, procedencia y estilo; ¿de qué se trata? ¿quién la interpreta? ¿de qué país viene? ¿qué tipo de ritmo utiliza? ¿porqué te gusta/qué es lo que más te gusta de la canción?
Cómo llegar a Porter Hall A20
Hay estacionamiento gratis en el garaje principal de la universidad—East Campus Garage, en la intersección de Forbes Avenue y Beeler Street.
Cuando llegue al edificio de estacionamiento llamado Parking Garage o a la parada del bus en la intersección de Morewood Avenue y Forbes, atraviese el campus hacia el sur, en dirección de Frew Street.
Al llegar a Baker Hall (el último edifico antes de llegar a Frew Street), entre y doble a la derecha.
Baje el pasillo hasta el final de Porter Hall (los dos edificios están conectados). Cuando llegue al final, baje por las escaleras hasta el nivel A del edificio. Si camina hacia su derecha, se encontrará con el salón antes de llegar a la salida del edificio que da al interior del campus.
Si viene por Frew Street
Porter Hall es adyacente a Flagstaff Hill, parte de Schenley Park. La entrada a Porter Hall al nivel de la calle se llama el nivel A. Al entrar el edificio y atravesarlo en direccion al interior del campus, se encontrara con el salón.
Directions to Porter Hall
Directions to Porter Hall
Directions from Frew St.:
Porter Hall is adjacent to Flagstaff Hill, part of Schenley Park. The ground entrance to Porter Hall is the A level. If you walk into the building and continue straight ahead, you will find the room as you approach the interior exit. Click here for directions through Google.
Directions from East Campus Garage:
Upon exit of garage, travel away from Forbes Avenue and towards the center of campus. The large building to your left is the University Center. Walk around to the back side of the University Center (away from Forbes Avenue). The large grassy area between the University Center and Purnell Center is called 'The Cut'. There are many sidewalks around and through 'The Cut'. Walking on the sidewalk diagonally across 'The Cut' is your best option to arrive at Porter Hall. The diagonal sidewalk from the University Center will lead you to the front entrance of Doherty Hall. On your left, you will note the painted 'fence' and the campus clock. Pass Doherty Hall and continue on the sidewalk that leads straight in front of you. You will note the 'Mall', another grassy area that extends from the College of Fine Arts (building to your left) to Hamerschlag Hall (to your right), which is topped by the iconographic cupula. This sidewalk will lead you to a large building on the right, which is divided into two campus halls, Baker Hall and Porter Hall. Porter Hall is on the lower end towards Hamerschlag Hall. The sidewalk will lead you to the entrance of Baker Hall, which is on your right. On the left is Hunt Library. Upon entering Baker Hall, walk towards the hallway ramp in front of you and walk straight down to the end until you enter Porter Hall on the 100 level. The A level is located at the bottom of the stairs. Stairs and an elevator connect with rooms in the 200 and 300 levels.
Reminder: Radio workshop starts Sept. 27
What? Radio workshop for young Spanish speakers, ages 6-12. Organized by Círculo Outreach Program, Department of Modern Languages, Carnegie Mellon University
When? Every Sunday Sept. 27-Dec. 6, 2-4 pm (except Thanksgiving Weekend). Space is limited. Please register by Sept. 21.
Where? Porter Hall A22, Carnegie Mellon University
Why? Children in the Pittsburgh area have little to no exposure to heritage language media content created specifically by and for others like them, resulting in a lack of opportunities required to develop and strengthen their bilingual and bicultural skills, and to create a sense of community which will empower them through the development of healthy social, educational, and psychological individualities. Furthermore, they have even fewer opportunities available to create this type of content. Our project seeks to bridge that gap on two levels: on the one hand, it will give a group of Hispanic heritage children ages 6 to 12 the opportunity to become dexterous in the use of media technology, and to use these skills to create and produce high quality material that is relevant to them and apt for broadcast and publication in radio, digital newspapers, blogs, and video- and audio-podcasts; on the other hand, it will give large numbers of Hispanic, Latin@ and Chican@ children the chance to become the audience for this material, and to communicate and interact with those who created it through phone calls, letters, and responses posted on electronic media. Through these 10-week workshops held at Carnegie Mellon University, mini-traveling workshops held in selected Hispanic nodal points in the city, activities in conjunction with a college-level course on Hispanic radio taught at CMU, and partnerships with existing media broadcasting organizations made in and for the Hispanic community in the Greater Pittsburgh area, we seek to make this project a reality. We look forward to working with you in providing these opportunities for the Spanish-speaking children in our region.
RADIOCICLÓN: RADIO HECHA POR JÓVENES PARA JÓVENES
El Taller de radio infantil Radiociclón está diseñado para niños y niñas de 6 a 12 años. Son diez sesiones en las que aprenderán la realización radiofónica a través de sesiones teóricas y prácticas. Trabajarán en grupos de 2-3 niñ@s de acuerdo a sus edades y conocimientos bajo la dirección de un/a maestr@ y con la asesoría de asistentes voluntari@s que son estudiantes de la universidad. Trabajarán en todo el proceso de preproducción, producción y realización del material, desde la creación de la idea, hasta la elaboración de un producto radiofónico digital completo que puede incluir entrevistas, información, comentarios, segmentos musicales, contactos con la comunidad y elementos de la tradición hispana. Al finalizar el TALLER, los integrantes se llevarán un disco compacto con los trabajos realizados. Además se abrirá un espacio en Internet que funcionará como Podcast o Radiodifusora, es decir, como espacio de difusión para los trabajos generados en los Talleres. El programa de radio hispana Barrio Latino seleccionará algunos de los trabajos para inclusión en su espacio “El Rincón infantil” que se emite entre 6 y 7 pm los jueves a tavés de WRCT.
Con estos talleres se busca brindar a los niños y niñas jóvenes hispanohablantes la oportunidad de tener acceso a, y adquirir competencia en, manejo de medios y tecnologías de la información y la comunicación, habilidades que pueden ser útiles para la vida personal y profesional. Al mismo tiempo que avanzan en el aprendizaje y la alfabetización tecnológica, creando producción escrita, visual y auditiva mediante el uso de herramientas informáticas, estarán compartiendo y creando lazos con otr@s jóvenes hispanohablantes y con sus familias, y siguiendo los modelos de éxito proporcionados por sus asistentes y maestr@s.
Los talleres tendrán lugar todos los domingos de 2 a 4 pm a partir del 27 de septiembre de 2009 en los salones PH A22 y PH A21 en Carnegie Mellon University. También utilizaremos los equipos y recursos del Laboratorio de Recursos del Departamento de Lenguas Modernas.
Foreign language is key to success
In most careers, fluency in another language is highly valued, not only for what such knowledge indicates about the employee but also for business ventures, creating a scenario where expanding into a global market becomes viable. A study published April 2006 in the "Journal of International Business Studies" concludes that introducing employees that speak another language into the workplace actually cuts transaction costs that involve international clients. Previously, if an employee was multilingual, they were utilized merely for the translation of bureaucratic documents (e.g. questionnaires). Language and the associated ethnic conventions were segregated from the skill itself. Language is now an integrated strategy within corporations. Commercial culture has shifted in its perception of multilingual people. Possessing knowledge of multiple languages is associated with many valued qualities, such as versatility, perceptivity and cooperation. In the pre-twenty-first century corporate milieu, multilingualism would brand an individual as an expatriate of another country, the child of an immigrant, or European - no outstanding traits would be attached.
Modelos hispanos en nuestra comunidad: Achugar
Tenemos el gran honor de compartir con ustedes el reconocimiento y la beca que ha recibido Mariana de la John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Mariana estará en Uruguay durante los próximos meses realizando su investigacion. Felicidades a ella y buena suerte a toda su familia en esta nueva aventura.
We're proud to share with you the award given by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to Mariana. She will be in Uruguay developing her research for the next several months. Congratulations to her and good luck to all her family in this new adventure.
The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has named Mariana Achugar as 2009 Guggenheim Fellow. The annual awards support the research of those who "add to the educational, literary, artistic and scientific power of this country."
"Professor Achugar joins a prestigious group of Guggenheim Fellows, and to have her accomplishments and ideas acknowledged this way is a significant honor," said John Lehoczky, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (H&SS). " The fellowships are designed to support outstandingly talented individuals performing groundbreaking research. Professor Achugar exemplifies this ideal."
Achugar, an associate professor of Spanish and second language acquisition skills in the Modern Languages Department, will use the yearlong fellowship to explore what Uruguayan teenagers know about the military dictatorship and how they learn about it by following nine high school students from different political, social and educational backgrounds.
"My research will connect two strands — what history is and how it is taught in terms of language throughout intergenerational periods," said Achugar. "It's my dream project to further examine the roles language, memory and pop culture play in constructing Uruguay's recent history."
Gracias además a Tina y a Rosi por toda su ayuda, y a CGF por su pesencia en representación de los niños del taller y por las fotografías que tomó.
