Sexta sesion: Mas expresion corporal!

--------------------------

Today the kids began the Círculo session with a review of the Jarabe Tapatio, the Mexican folklore dance they have been practicing for a while. Next they had the chance to play a game they learned a few sessions ago, The Wolf. Through this game the kids were able to review the Spanish words used to describe their morning routines and run around, chasing each other. After this game the children also got a chance to review the letters of the Spanish alphabet, especially the vowels which the younger kids have been practicing.
After these review activities, the volunteers switched to an activity focused on using the kids’ imaginations. Getting in a circle, everyone got the chance to name a type of food (i.e. lettuce, tomatoes, or sausages) that they wanted to put into their imaginary sandwiches. Then, the children and volunteers took part in eating their sandwiches. But when they were finished with that, their imagination took them aboard a boat where the kids and volunteers had to face the dangers of sharks and storms. Luckily, they managed to all make it out in one piece. Glad to have their bodies intact, the kids and volunteers then began to review the Spanish words for body parts. Many of the kids still recalled the song they learned last session and they were able to sing along this time.
Following the song, the kids reviewed the different spatial levels (short, medium, and tall) and the different types of lines (curved and angular). After twisting their bodies into different shapes at different levels, the kids got the chance to review the names of their peers and the volunteers as they made a shape and shouted out their name. Next, the kids were taught the new concept of negative space. All of the kids and volunteers made a masterpiece attaching themselves together, using each other’s negative space. After pictures were taken to capture the moment, everyone enjoyed a snack break featuring hot dogs and cake. Following their break, the kids got the chance to spin around, holding a rainbow sheet, as one kid after another took turns running and hiding beneath it.  And during the last minutes of the session, the kids got the chance to participate in a Goodbye Dance, as they displayed the moves of their choice from one end of the room to the other.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The day began with the kids playing a name game: they tossed a ball to the next student after excitingly naming them from a circle. This was a great way to review the names of the volunteers and the children alike. Next, the kids learned some Zumba moves. The kids enjoyed the fun, exciting, involved dance moves. After Zumba, the kids practiced some regional Mexican dance. The difficult footwork was no challenge for the kids. They had fun playing with their colorful skirts and fancy sombreros.

The next activity was somewhat of a geometry lesson. The kids reviewed the differences between curved lines and straight lines. The teacher had the students model each type of line with their bodies. By the end of this lesson, each kid was twisted on the floor like a pretzel in attempts of making straight or curved lines. The next lesson followed the spatial theme with high, medium, and low levels. Needless to say, demonstrating these required lots of exercise that was strenuous on both the volunteers and the kids.

The next activity involved the kids naming their body parts through song. The catchy song even had a catchy dance to go along with it! It is possible that the kids will be practicing the songs while at home. They also practiced the body parts by labeling a human subject! Alex, a volunteer, laid on the ground as the kids placed the names of the body parts on the coinciding body parts. They even snuck a tickle when naming the ribs. After a refreshing snack of strawberries and coconut cream pie, the kids played one last game to practice the different spatial levels they had learned. The kids pretended they were ostriches who had hatched from eggs and had to look for food and get out of the rain. After this fun game, the children went home. Photos and video.

See you next Sunday for more exploration of body language!
