-----------------------------------------------------

This Sunday we had a very special visit from Unión Latinx of Allegheny College. Beside making the trip to Pittsburgh in order to get to know us and share the afternoon with the children, they made us a delivery of small gifts for the kids and a gift of money they had collected in their event, “Nacho Libre” to benefit Círculo Juvenil. This money that they generously brought us will be put towards scholarships for the participants of Circulo Juvenil that need the money.

The friends of the Unión Latinx participated with us in a game of Wah that we did as an icebreaker, and then they accompanied us outside, taking advantage of the good weather, in order to finish painting our masks. The mask that they painted for us was a gift that will be more than cherished.

During snack time, Unión Latinx did a presentation that they prepared about the Carnival of Guatemala, including some videos about the making of “cascarones” or “eggshells” and another in which various children talked about their costumes and of the activities of that date. During the second hour of the workshop, they accompanied us to a rehearsal of “Corito,” and then they headed back to their study in Allegheny College. It was a great pleasure to have them and we thank them for their generosity and work in benefiting our group of kids.

We hope to see you all next Sunday!

Sesión 7: Carnaval en México

(English text below)

---------------------

To begin the session this Sunday, we drew and colored while we waited for others to arrive. When we had a sufficiently large group, we devoted time to reviewing rhythms, songs, and dances of the Carnival of Uruguay and Colombia for our final presentations. We spent several minutes reviewing the lyrics and steps of la canción del caballito.

During snack time, one of our volunteers told us about the carnival that they celebrate in Mexico every December 12th, and the relation that it has with the characters of the llorona and the Virgin of Guadalupe, as well as Aztec and Mayan gods.

In the second hour, as it is custom, we divided into groups in order to work with “El Corito” and the computers. As a group sang and danced to the songs that they had practiced, in the laboratory, they devoted time to create a digital card for Carnival.

Our final presentation is approaching. Thank you for all of your work this Sunday. We will see you next time!

(text in English below)

This week’s workshop began with a game of “Snakes and Ladders.”  As more children arrived, we continued with another game of “broken telephone,” in which we would use vocabulary words pertaining to carnivals we have talked about in the past as a refresher for the children (for example, vejigante, marimonda, mamá vieja, Rey Momo, etc.).
Then, in groups, the kids worked with volunteers to make a poster for each of the countries we have learned about to present on the last day of the workshop.  One group prepared a poster on the Carnival in Colombia, while another created one on the Carnival in Uruguay.   Using drawings, clippings, and other ornaments, the kids designed posters with what they had chosen as the most important aspects of elements of each celebration.  Meanwhile, some of the other children continued to paint the masks that they had started the past session.  Later, during the provided snack, the children listened to a presentation on the Carnival in Chile.  Specifically, they learned about the festival of Tirana, located in the North of Chile.  In the second hour, some of the children practiced songs with Corito, while others went to the computer lab to continue their computer programming projects.  As always, it was a fun and informative workshop.
See you next Sunday!
