¡Gracias por su apoyo en el 2015!/ Thanks for your support in 2015!

As we look back at our accomplishments for this year, we would like to take a moment to give thanks for the help and support provided to our outreach program by Modern Languages, the Sprout fund and digital Corps, families, and the numerous individuals who volunteered for our program. It is very clear to us that without this support, our work with the Spanish-speaking children would not be possible.

Special thanks to Christine Hucko for creating the visual

This visual details some of the contributions to the Spanish-speaking community in Pittsburgh that this generous support made possible during 2015. This year we were also very fortunate to have our workshops featured by Dietrich News, NeXT Pittsburgh, and Remake Learning (links will redirect to the articles). We look forward to continue growing and serving the community.

¡Felices fiestas! to all on behalf of El Círculo Juvenil de Cultura

10. Sesión final

(English text below)

¡Felices fiestas!
¡Nos vemos el semestre entrante!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last Sunday, we met for the last Circulo Juvenil session of the semester, which we celebrated with a party. We started by preparing the room for the parents.

This semester, we had worked for eight weeks, experimenting how to narrate our stories using different media like comics, drama, puppets, and digital media. Last Sunday we wanted to show the families and the community a bit of the work we had done.
The volunteers put up the kids’ work around the room, including their comics, puppets, and other creative projects. And, of course, the machine! We had some difficulty with the assembly of the machine, especially with the airplane, but finally it worked. When the parents arrived, the leaders of Circulo introduced the featured works, and then the parents had an opportunity to explore with their kids. We had a fantastic performance of the puppet theaters, as well as a few presentations of the programming tool, Scratch. After these performances, we had a final snack with the parents, where every member of Circulo received a gift, and the kids were given certificates as well. It was a great end to a very fun semester!

We only have expressions of gratitude for the kids, their families, our team of instructors and volunteers, and all the people who have collaborated to make this semester's workshop possible. Thank you also to the Department of Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon for all the support they have given our program over the years.
Many thanks to Kim Lyons (Kidsburgh & Next Pittsburgh) and Emily Stimmel (Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences News) for the notes they dedicated to our Fall workshop:

El Circulo gives Spanish-speaking kids a sense of community

Tell It To Me: Hispanic and Latino Children Learn “Cuéntamelo”

We will be back in February with another spring workshop. Happy holidays! We hope to see you again next semester!

9. El dilema de Domingo

(English text below)

In this week’s session we mainly worked on the machine. For the first time we set it all up and we tweaked some parts to make the whole machine work together. We had a marble go down a slide to push a box of crayons down that would cause the tower of Playdoh cups to make the plane go down and cause all the dominos to fall and push the cat into the boat so it can travel across the water. It was quite a thrill putting all these pieces together. We worked so hard on this machine we almost forgot our plan for the day! When we finally stopped working on the machine, we took some time to have some yummy snacks and sing Happy Birthday to one of the participants, who turned 10 years old!

After snack time, we went back to the room and read El El dilema de Domingo, which is about a dragon who had a very hard task. We then discussed the story and started talking about the piece we’re going to do with all the puppets we created. All the kids had such creative ideas! The last thing we discussed was the big feast we’re going to have in December, where we will perform our sketches and all the parents will get to see all the puppets we created.

Happy Thanksgiving! See you on the 6th for our last session for the Fall workshop!

8. La nariz y la boca

(English text below)

This week at Círculo Juvenil, we focused on constructing puppets and backgrounds, with which we created a dialogue.

We began our Sunday session by continuing to work on the construction of the machine. The kids built a boat out of cork and wooden blocks, which finally succeeded in sailing without sinking!

Then we played an icebreaker, which concluded with a close tie between one of the kids and volunteers. Following the icebreaker, we watched a presentation on a variety of puppets that we could base ours off of. We saw some shadow puppets and sock puppets, as well as some better known puppets such as Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street. Then we got to see an example of puppets in action, in the video of “La Nariz y la Boca”, by the puppet theater Armadillo
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qW6S748U-ys). We discussed how we could create characters like the ones we saw in the video, and shared some ideas of what they could be.

After a snack break, we began working on the puppets, each volunteer paired with a kid. The kids created a variety of puppets, from princesses to turtles! We ended the day with a performance by the kids and volunteers with their puppets.

See you Sunday!

7. El robot que quería ser niño

(English text below) (video summary)

In this Sunday’s session we focused on robots, which is very appropriate for CMU. We began with the continuation of the construction of our Rube Goldberg machine. The kids and volunteers added some new elements to the machine and worked specially on the flight of the paper airplane. Then we took a break from the machine to play an icebreaker called “Wa!” After the icebreaker, we sat in a circle and watched the video “El robot frenético” that tells the story of a robot looking for his family.

Inspired by the short video, the children made some sketches in their robot notebooks. While they were drawing, one of the volunteers read the book El robot que quería ser niño which is about a robot who is not sure if he has a heart or not, so the children decided to add hearts to their robot drawings. After all this robot talk, everyone was ready for snack time.

After having yummy snacks, we all headed to the computer lab to create robots in the program called Scratch. The kids had a great time making their robots with different backgrounds and actions. After that the kids presented all their robots to each other and the volunteers and we thought that was a great way to end the day, but we had one more surprise! One of the volunteers figured out how to make the paper plane work in the machine so the kids had a chance to see the machine in action before heading home.

See you Sunday!

We began this Sunday’s Círculo by working on the construction of our Rube Goldberg machine. The children and the volunteers began putting together ideas of how to implement everyone’s sketches and plans to create a physical machine. After coming up with some great building plans, we cleaned up and sat down to read a story about Día de los Muertos, which is celebrated on November 2nd. Some of the children volunteered to read the story, which was written in both English and Spanish, aloud to the group. After a short discussion about what Día de los Muertos is and where it is celebrated, we learned a song called “Chumba la Cachumba.” We had a lot of fun learning the dance to it and singing along!

All of that singing and dancing brought on some serious hunger, so we took a break for snack. We got to try some delicious pan de muerto, among other yummy things. After snack, we headed over to the computer lab to work on some activities. Everybody took turns decorating sugar skulls, coloring skull masks, and virtually decorating skulls using a program on the computers called Scratch. We had a great time today learning about Día de los Muertos!

See you on Sunday!
