-----------------
LAst Sunday we had the wonderful opportunity to work with an artist from the community. Geña brought us stories, songs, and dances with drums to share with kids and adults.
The first part of the session was devoted to activities related to the soccer words we had become familiar with and the book the kids had received last session. From there, they passed on to an activity designed by some of our volunteers with the objective of introducing the kids to the musical instruments and a guessing game.
Geña brought us "La leyenda de Yayo", a story in which each intrument introduced itself, giving the kids the chance to play each one. At this point they also had a chance to look at the image of a coquí frog. When they were all familiar with the instruments, Geña showed them how to play the basic drum rhythms. Each child was able to follow the rhythm on one of the instruments. Toward the end, they improvised the song Bámbulae Sea Yá! based on the rhytms they had learned and practiced.
The snack was delicious, and it was donated by one of our families. After eating, the kids made up some lines for the song they had been playing, adding them to the basic steps of the bomba dance. Those who felt in the mood for dancing did. The session ended with the integration of the drum and clave rhythms, the dance, and the verses of Bámbulae Sea Ya!

Sunday was
the last spring session of the Circulo Juvenil workshop on Our food/Nuestra comida. The children learned how to
make chocolate with an all-natural no-bake recipe and there was a review of other sessions. To begin, the children
practiced songs and poems to show their parents. After this activity, the older kids and their instructor showed the younger children how to make the chocolates the way they had learned it the preceding Sunday. They were very rich
and delicious! Finally, to end the workshop, there was a closing activity. The
children sang all of the songs they had learned during the semester. The songs
were “Canción del chocolate” and “Los cocineritos”. There was also a presentation of the
bean plants in the form of an acrostic poem. A volunteer, then showed them how to make dried fruit and gave each kid a bag full of nutritive natural snacks! At the end of the
session, the parents gave books to the children. The books had all the
activities that had been done during the semester. It was a great day and
afterwards everyone enjoyed some delicious food!

garnachas
(English text below)
This week our workshop started with having the children play the match game again. Everyone had a card with either a picture or a term on it relating to the foods and recipes that the kids had learned in past weeks. The object of the game was to have the kids find the match to their card. After, with their pair, the kids went to the next classroom to continue the game. Each pair had to search for a fruit that was hidden within the classroom.
When this activity finished, the group was split up to read two different stories. The stories were named "Sopa de frijol" and "A Comer/Let's eat". While the stories were being read, the volunteers asked the children questions and discussed what was happening in the story.
Moving into the kitchen the kids learned about a recipe from Guatemala named garnachas. The family in charge taught the kids a little bit about the country of Guatemala and then showed them the recipe form garnachas. Each of the children had a chance to help in the process of preparing the garnachas that they later got to try. This week, the kids got double dessert. Not only did they get sopapillas with their garnachas, but also a group from Carnegie Mellon University named Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers came to teach the kids about Peru. First there was a presentation that described a little of the history of Peru and culture. After the presentation, the kids got the chance to try truffles from Peru.
The next activity was a game called "Telephone". The way the game worked was that the children were in a line and had to whisper into each others ear a phrase that was given to the first person in line. The catch is that the children had to pass on the message with only hearing it once. This makes the game funny because as each kid hears the message a little part may change. At the end, a completely different sentence was announced. For the last activity the children made acrostic poem using the word "frijoles". The kids used words that they had learned in past weeks about food to help finish the poem.
See you Sunday for a closing celebration of our Spring workshop!

Cocinado o Crudo?
Cocinada o Cruda?
No parece posible.
