Comidas!

Este domingo l@s chic@s se chuparon los dedos. No sólo pudieron much@s de ell@s deleitarse con la rica comida del Festival Latinoamericano y del Caribe en la U de Pittsburgh, sino que además tod@s trajeron hoy una receta para compartir con sus compañer@s. Escuchamos a l@s chic@s compartir los ingredientes y el proceso para hacer delicias como arepas y tostones, o postres exquisitos como la rosca de reyes o el flan. Un aplauso grande para Matías, quien se tomó el tiempo de preparar empanadas con su mamá y luego las trajo a la sesión para compartirlas con tod@s. Mmmm! Hay much@s testigos de que estaban deliciosas...

Después de esto, en sus grupos l@s chic@s se inventaron algunas nuevas recetas y actividades a partir de lo que habían compartido al principio. Tuvimos entonces desde la receta para hacer una torta en forma de pelota de fútbol, hasta un juego llamado "Pasa el flan", o una guerra de comida. Realmente pudimos apreciar la creatividad de nuestr@s jóvenes reporter@s en pleno.

Tarea para el próximo domingo: vacaciones y ecosistemas
Pensar en un lugar del mundo hispano al que hayan ido de vacaciones y que les guste. ¿Por qué les gusta este lugar? ¿Cuándo estuvieron allí y con quién? ¿Qué animales y plantas hay/ había en este lugar? Si pueden, traer para compartir una fotografía o un dibujo en el que se vean algun@s de est@s animales o plantas.

Nos vemos el domingo! Que (l@s chic@s) disfruten de la semana de vacaciones de la escuela!

Ah, y quizás hayan notado el nuevo look de nuestro blog. Nos encantaría saber lo que piensan, pueden dejarnos un comentario abajo.

On Sunday, the kids enjoyed talking about food. Not only did many of them come from enjoying the great food from the Latin American and Caribbean Festival at U of Pittsburgh, but also today they all brought a recipe to share with their compañer@s. They shared the ingredients and the process to make delicacies like arepas and tostones, or delicious desserts like the rosca de reyes or the flan (custard). A big applause for Matias, who took the time to prepare empanadas with his mother and then brought them to share with everyone. Mmmm! Many people commented they were delicious ...

We also had some good riddles related to food.

After that, the kids worked in their groups to invent some new recipes and games or activities related to what they had shared at first. We had then a recipe for a cake in the form of a soccer ball, or a game called "Pass the flan," or even a food fight. We really appreciate the creativity of our young reporter@s.

Task for next Sunday: Vacations and ecosystems
Think of a place in the Hispanic world where you have gone on holiday and that you like. Why do you like this place? When were you there and with whom? What animals and plants are/ were in this place? If you can, bring to share a photo or a drawing that will show some of these animals or plants.

See you on Sunday! (At least for the kids) enjoy the week off from school!

Dos grandes noticias para esta semana:
La primera edición del periódico "Niñ@s reporter@s", ya está circulando por el ciberespacio!! (Hacer click acA para verlo). Felicidades a tod@s l@s chic@s integrantes del taller por este logro y por su gran trabajo!
Este sábado estaremos compartiéndola con todos los asistentes al 30o. Festival Latinoamericano y del Caribe en la U de Pittsburgh. Estaremos además realizando varias de las actividades para chicos y jóvenes. Les esperamos!

El domingo anterior, l@s niñ@s asistentes al taller seleccionaron y trajeron noticias del mundo hispano, relacionadas con ciencia, tecnología, arte, etc., según sus intereses personales. Luego, crearon historias nuevas basadas en las noticias que leyeron y escucharon. Finalmente, las digitaron en los computadores.

Tarea para el próximo domingo: receta
Preparar una receta típica con ayuda de sus madres y/o padres y llegar el domingo preparad@s para contar cómo la hicieron y qué les pareció. Pueden también traer escrita una receta típica del mundo hispanoparlante. Si pueden sacarle una foto al plato terminado o encontrar una imagen ilustrativa y traerla sería genial.

Para quienes tengan dificultades para pasar tiempo en la cocina o entre los recetarios esta semana, la alternativa puede ser que vengan preparad@s para hablar sobre los alimentos y productos que conocen que son de Latinoamérica y España y que se comen comúnmente. Pueden traer fotos de su comida favorita del país del papá o la mamá y preguntarles a ell@s por sus platos favoritos.

A ver quién se atreve a traer de postre la mejor adivinanza relacionada con comida!

Two big stories this week:
The first edition of the newspaper "Niñ@s Reporter@s" is already circulating through cyberspace! (click here). Congratulations to the Circulo kids for all their hard work and dedication in getting this together.
This Saturday we will be sharing it with everyone at 30th. Latin American and Caribbean Festival at U. of Pittsurgh. We will be in charge of several of the children's activities. Hope to see you there!

The previous Sunday, the kids selected and brought news of the Hispanic world related to science, technology, art, etc., according to their personal interests. Then they created new stories based on the news they read and heard. Finally, they typed their creations on the computers.

For next Sunday: recipes
Prepare a typical recipe with the help of your mom and/ or dad and come on Sunday ready to share how you did it and what you thought of the recipe. You may also write down and bring a typical recipe from the Spanish-speaking world. If you can, take a picture of the finished dish, or find one in a book, magazine, or the Internet, and bring it.

For those who may find it difficult to spend time in the kitchen or among cookbooks this week, the alternative may be to come prepared to talk about food and products you know and that are commonly eaten in Latin America and Spain. You may bring photos of a favorite food of the country mom or dad come from, and ask them about your favorite dishes.

For dessert, let's see who can bring the best riddle related to food or eating!

El domingo anterior, l@s niñ@s vieron las diferencias entre caricaturas y tiras cómicas,
hicieron una caricatura de ell@s mism@s y fabricaron tiras cómicas con

Last Sunday, the children worked on the difference between cartoons and comic strips,
fashioned themselves in caricature style, and made comics with some jokes they had brought, creating some laughs.

They also helped in the design of the first edition of their newspaper, "Niñ@s Reporter@s", which will be circulating in the Internet very soon...

El domingo pasado l@s chic@s exploraron la función de las fotografía en un diario. L@s niñ@s trajeron fotografías sacadas de diarios y revistas en español y en grupitos inventaron historias para las cuales estas imágenes servirían de ilustraciones. Luego escribieron estas historias y las complementaron con algunas imágenes tomadas por ell@s mism@s.

Para el domingo 14 de marzo, l@s niñ@s van a trabajar con caricaturas y otros ejemplos de humor en el periódico. La TAREA es que pidan a sus padres ayuda y encuentren en diarios algunas caricaturas interesantes, cómicas, entretenidas, etc. y posiblemente también alguna broma para compartir.

Last Sunday we talked about the role of photographs in a journal. The kids brought clipped photographs from Spanish-language newspapers and magazines, and worked in groups to make up stories for which these images might serve as illustrations. They wrote these stories and supplemented with some images they themselves took.

For Sunday March 14, the kids will work with cartoons and other examples of humor in a newspaper. The task is to ask their parents to help them find some cartoons in newspapers that are interesting, funny, entertaining, and so on. They may also bring a joke to share.

Titulares/ Headlines

El domingo pasado trabajamos con la función de los titulares, los niños trajeron titulares sacados de diarios en español y en grupitos inventaron historias relacionadas con ellos. Los ayudantes estuvieron en la supervisión de la escritura de estas historias.

En la segunda parte, los grupos de niños inventaron noticias positivas para el mundo y para ellos mismos. Estas noticias fueron escritas en el computador con la asistencia de los ayudantes y también cada chico o chica hizo dibujos para acompañar la historia.

Para el domingo que viene, los niños van a trabajar con imágenes en el periódico. La TAREA es que busquen en diarios fotografías interesantes, cómicas, entretenidas, etc. y que traigan el titular que va con la fotografía.

Last Sunday we worked with headlines and their function--the children brought headlines clipped from Spanish newspapers and magazines and worked in small groups to invent stories associated with them. The assistants oversaw the writing of these stories.

In the second part, the groups of children invented positive news for the world and themselves. These reports were written on the computer with the aid of the assistants and every child drew a picture to accompany the story.

For next Sunday, the children will work with pictures from newspapers. They should look in newspapers for photographs they find interesting, comic, entertaining, and so on, and bring the headline that goes with each photography.

Ya tenemos diario! Por voto democrático el diario se llamará "Niños reporteros" y tendrá muchas secciones diferentes elegidas también por los chicos. Algunas de estas secciones serán Espacio y tecnología, adivinanzas, juegos, trabalenguas, entrevistas, historias, etc.

En la primera sesión, además de discutir las secciones del diario y el nombre, los niños hicieron su perfil de reporteros. Cada uno usó el computador para escribir sus nombres, características personales, preferencias, etc. Los niños aprendieron a usar diferentes tipos y tamaños
de letras. Después de eso, ilustraron sus perfiles con dibujos relacionados con sus preferencias.

Durante esta semana, esperamos que los niños vean diarios en español con sus padres (especialmente aquellos de donde vienen sus padres) y que busquen y traigan a la sesión del domingo 21 algunos TITULARES que les parezcan interesantes y/o entretenidos. Además, pueden elegir traer a la sesión un chiste, una adivinanza o un trabalenguas.

We have a newspaper! By democratic vote, the newspaper will be called "NiN@s reporter@s" ("Young reporters", and will have many different sections also chosen by the children. Some of these sections will be space and technology, riddles, games, tongue twisters, interviews, stories, etc.

In the first session, besides discussing the sections of the newspaper and the name, the children made their journalist IDs. Each one used the computer to write their names, personal characteristics, preferences, etc.. The children learned to use different fonts and letter sizes. After that, they illustrated their profiles with drawings related to their preferences.

This week, we hope the children will take a look at some newspapers in Spanish with their parents (especially those made where their parents come from) and find and bring a few interesting or entertaining HEADLINES to the next meeting on Sunday, 21st. They can also choose to bring to the meeting a joke, a riddle or a tongue-twister.

¡ Joven, digital y 100% en español!

(Pittsburgh’s first Spanish-language youth digital newspaper! A workshop for Spanish speakers ages 6-12)

El Círculo Juvenil de Cultura, un grupo de jóvenes hispano-hablantes, ha iniciado labores para la creación del primer periódico hispano-latino, digital y juvenil creado en la ciudad de Pittsburgh y sus alrededores. El primer número del periódico, que tendrá una frecuencia mensual de publicación, aparecerá a principios del mes de marzo.

L@s jóvenes de 6 a 12 años interesad@s en participar y contribuir en el periódico con sus textos, fotografías, caricaturas, etc., podrán inscribirse en el Taller de Periódico, a realizarse todos los domingos, del 14 de febrero al 18 de abril, de 3 a 5 p.m., en las instalaciones del Departamento de Lenguas Modernas de Carnegie Mellon University. En este taller, los participantes aprenderán todo lo necesario, desde cómo teclear correctamente en el procesador de palabras, hasta cómo crear fotografía digital y otros materiales para publicación. El costo del taller completo (10 sesiones de 2 horas cada una) es de $100. Hay un número limitado de becas disponibles y posibilidades de obtener descuentos por necesidad económica y por número de herman@s inscritos. ¡Ojo! El cupo y la asistencia económica son limitados.

Final del taller de radio, les esperamos en el próximo!

Radiociclón para ti! Con estas palabras fuimos recibidos los asistentes al evento del domingo pasado. El final del taller de radio fue un momento indicado para premiar a l@s chic@s con los aplausos de sus padres, maestras, organizadores del taller, e incluso de la directora del Departamento de Lenguas Modernas de Carnegie Mellon University, quien asistió al evento. No era para menos. Durante cerca de una hora, l@s integrantes del taller nos dieron muestras indiscutibles de su talento y del trabajo realizado a lo largo de este taller. Con la animación y el liderazgo de Nelly, una de sus maestras, los asistentes pudimos ver fotografías y escuchar una selección de las grabaciones realizadas durante el semestre. Para complementar, l@s chic@s nos presentaron un programa radial en vivo, consistente de bromas, adivinanzas, y entrevistas a los presentes. La tarde estuvo llena de risas y sonrisas, admiración y aprecio, y mucho sentimiento de orgullo por el trabajo de l@s chic@s. Para finalizar, cada integrante del taller recibió un certificado de participación y se repartieron CDs con varias de las grabaciones realizadas a lo largo del semestre. Los asistentes voluntarios, el director artístico y las maestras también recibieron un reconocimiento especial por su trabajo, ayuda y liderazgo. La tarde se clausuró con una breve recepción en homenaje a l@s chic@s, en que departimos galletas y bebidas.

En síntesis, podemos decir sin ninguna duda que fue un taller muy productivo, y que el trabajo realizado por l@s chic@s va a perdurar en nuestro recuerdo (pero además podremos escucharlos mediante los enlaces en el blog a sus podcasts).

Estaremos en contacto próximamente para pedirles a los padres y las madres de l@s chic@s participantes que nos ayuden a evaluar el taller mediante una breve encuesta. También les contactaremos para contarles detalles de nuestro próximo taller, que iniciará a fines de enero y principios de febrero, y en que l@s participantes elaborarán su propio periódico juvenil, para compartir con otr@s chic@s y también con adultos de la comunidad hispana.

Muchas gracias a tod@s por su colaboración y empeño, sin los cuales no habría sido posible la realización de este taller. Como una organización totalmente voluntaria, no podemos funcionar sin la ayuda de tod@s ustedes, y agradecemos sobremanera cada cosa que ustedes hacen.

Radiociclón para ti! With these words we were greeted at the event on Sunday. The end of the workshop was an opportunity to reward all children with the applause of their parents, teachers, organizers of the workshop, and even the director of the Department of Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon University, who attended the event . And for a good reason. For nearly an hour, participants in the workshop gave us samples of their undeniable talent and work all along this term. With Nelly, one of their teachers, playing radio host, attendees could see pictures and hear a selection of recordings made during the semester. As a complement, the kids performed a live radio program, consisting of jokes, riddles, and interviews with those present. The afternoon was full of smiles and laughter, admiration and appreciation, and much sense of pride in the work of these kids. Finally, each member of the workshop received a certificate of participation and CDs with recordings made throughout the semester were given out. The volunteer assistants, the artistic director and the teachers also received special recognition for their work, support and leadership. The event ended with a brief reception in honor of the kids, in which all ate cookies and drank juice.

In summary, we can say without a doubt that it was a very productive workshop, and that the work done by the children will stay in our memories for a long time (but we can also listen via the links on the blog to their podcasts).

We will be in touch shortly to ask parents and mothers of the participants to help us evaluate the workshop through a brief survey. We will also contact them to share details of our next workshop, which will begin in late January and early February, and in which participants will develop their own youth newspaper/magazine to share with others within the Hispanic community.

Thank you very much a tod@ s for your cooperation and commitment, without which it would not have been possible to conduct this workshop. As an entirely volunteer organization, we can not function without your help, and we greatly appreciate everything you do.

El jueves 3 de diciembre, el Círculo Juvenil de Cultura estuvo en Lancaster, PA, participando del PA Latino Summit Roots for Change: Strengthening Pennsylvania's Future--Latino Students in he Era of Globalization, organizado por la Comision Gubernamental para Asuntos Latinos, Governor's Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs. On Thursday Dec. 3rd, the Círculo Juvenil was in Lancaster, PA, participating in the PA Latino Summit Roots for Change: Strengthening Pennsylvania's Future--Latino Students in he Era of Globalization, organized by the Governor's Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs.
