¡Vamos Tartans!

Este domingo, en vez de iniciar el taller en la sala, nos reunimos en grupo para ver el partido del equipo masculino de CMU contra Case Western University. ¡Los Tartans contra los Spartans! Fue un día muy lindo y perfecto para ver y disfrutar el fútbol. Vimos todo el primer tiempo, incluso un gol muy bonito de los CMU Tartans. Un@s niñ@s tomaron video y fotos del partido para documentar nuestr@ excursión especial. Durante el medio tiempo, l@s niñ@s pudieron entrar a la cancha para participar en una competencia amistosa para meter penales. También aprovecharon la oportunidad para correr y jugar una pichanguita entre sí y con l@s voluntari@s. Cuándo ya iban a empezar el segundo tiempo, regresamos (cruzando todo el campus) a la sala. Después de ejercer tanta energía junto la emoción del partido nos quedamos cansadit@s y list@s para la merienda.

L@s niñ@s que no vinieron al partido, se quedaron en la sala haciendo títeres y papel mache. Cuándo nos juntamos en grupo grande, comimos la merienda y escuchamos una bonita presentación sobre México (gracias a la familia de Hillary). L@s niñ@s aprendieron sobre la cultura mexicana, los equipos de fútbol de México, y mucho más.

Después del descanso, un@s niñ@s fueron a continuar los títeres de papel mache mientras l@s demás empezaron a aprender sobre la cultura de l@s fanáticos del fútbol. Escucharon unas canciones de países diferentes para las Copas Mundiales desde 1962 (una canción de estilo "rock" y un video en blanco y negro de Chile) hasta la "Waka Waka" de 2012. Siguiendo con el ritmo de porristas y fanáticos, l@s niñ@s mostraron su orgullo por los países hispanohablantes ¡pintándose las caras! Todos querían pintarse las caras con los colores de las banderas diversas y andar gritando los cantos de sus países y bailando como si estuvieran apoyándolos en una Mundial de verdad. Tuvieron caras de México, Argentina, Brasil, Uruguay, España, y Colombia. Fue un día excelente para apreciar la cultura profunda del fútbol. Vimos un partido de CMU y nos volvimos fanáticos de Latinoamérica- ¡todo en un día!

Let's go Tartans!



This Sunday, instead of starting the session in the classroom, we met as a group to watch the CMU Men's Soccer game against Case Western University. The Tartans versus the Spartans! It was a beautiful day, perfect to watch and enjoy the game. We saw all of the first half, including a great goal by the CMU Tartans. Some of the children took video clips and photos of the game to document our special excursion. During halftime, the kids were able to go onto the field and participate in a friendly "shootout" competition to score penalty kicks. They also took advantage of the opportunity to run around and play a quick game of "pick-up" amongst themselves and the volunteers. When it was time to start the second half, we returned (crossing the whole campus) to the classroom. After exerting so much energy, together with the excitement of the game, we arrived tired out and ready for the snack.

The children that did not come to the game stayed in the classroom working on making paper mache puppets. Once we had grouped together again, we ate our snack and listened to a wonderful presentation about Mexico (thanks to Hillary's family). We learned about Mexican culture, soccer teams in Mexico, and much more.

After the break, some of the kids continued with the puppets and paper mache projects while the rest began to learn about the fan culture that surrounds soccer. They listened to songs from different countries for various World Cup tournaments, starting in 1962 (with a Chilean rock song accompanied by a black and white music video) and ending with the "Waka Waka" of 2012. Continuing with the rhythm of fans and cheerleaders, the children showed their pride for Spanish-speaking countries by painting their faces! Everyone wanted to paint their faces with the colors of their country's flag and go about chanting and dancing as if they really were cheering for them in a World Cup. They had faces from Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, España, and Colombia. It was an excellent day to appreciate the vast culture of soccer. We saw a CMU game and became excited fans from Latin America- all in one day!
