Sesiones 1 y 2, taller de otoño

(English text below)

The kids have been having so much fun these past Sundays!! During the first session, and after introductions, they went outside, chalk in hand, to draw their own boards for the game of rayuela, golosa, peregrina, or caracol, some of the names given to these games in the Hispanic world. They then pulled out the marbles to play "tirar frijoles", a game that is common among Bolivian kids that they enjoyed and laughed at. During the second part of the session, and working in their small groups, the kids worked at designing their own board games for which they created some materials during the second session. They will be sharing these games with all members of the workshop as soon as they are done creating them.

During the second session, they started by playing a Spanish-language version of "Simon says", followed by a song and a game shared by one of the mothers, who also shared a delicious snack. They then went outside to Schenley park, where with the help of the student volunteers, they looked for treasures. Sara, who had lost one of
her teeth the previous Sunday, was lucky enough to find a great surprise! It must have been the tooth fairy, or better yet, el ratón Pérez!

Juegos, juguetes y videojuegos!

WASHINGTON – English only?

With Hispanic enrollment surging in schools, many Spanish-speaking parents are having trouble helping their children with homework or communicating with U.S. teachers as English-immersion classes proliferate in K-12.

An Associated Press-Univision poll highlights the language and cultural obstacles for the nation's Latinos, who lag behind others when it comes to graduating from high school.

The second issue of Nin@s Reporter@s is out! The children received a paper copy to share with their families, but it can also be seen (in full color) here.

This week the children once again had the opportunity to spend much of the time outside, thanks to the wonderful weather. In addition to sharing their stories and opinions about issues related to the environment, and their very original solutions, we had an unexpected and very musical visit: Nelly Juarez, an alumna of the CMU School of Music, whom several of the children already knew from her experience as a teacher of The Circulo workshops, came to visit. They were able to get into their role as reporters and do an interview, excerpts of which will published in the third issue of the paper, which is in preparation. Nelly also played several pieces for them in her French horn, and she invited those who wanted, to try to play a few notes. It was a pleasant surprise to hear the talent (and admire the lungs) of several of our reporters! What a nice experience! Many thanks to Nelly for her generosity and presence.
The homework for Sunday 18 continues the theme of the interviews. The kids will ask a few questions to their parent/s on a topic of their choice and will take some notes (or they can record the interview on audio or video if they like). They will then come to the workshop prepared to share it with fellow reporters and to draw from it to create a note on the computer. Those who wish may bring supporting materials such as photographs or drawings to accompany the note.

On Easter Sunday the kids took advantage of the beautiful day to be outside. They ran and looked for Easter eggs (and a snack). It was a small ritual to welcome spring, and it connected well with the idea of talking about nature, plants and animals in the places of the Hispanic world where they have been on vacation. As part of the work they created stories and illustrations of these sites, letting their imagination fly as usual.

This week the homework links a bit to last week's because it also relates to flora and fauna, but this time with relation to ecology. The theme of this Sunday's session will be:

How can we improve the environment?

Children must bring a newspaper or magazine picture or draw a picture of something they think is not good for the earth and bring ideas of how to fix it.

During the session of the workshop we will make a list of recommendations to improve the environment.

The second issue of their Niñ@s Reporter@s will soon be circulating. Stay tuned!

Comidas!

(English text below)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Sunday, the kids enjoyed talking about food. Not only did many of them come from enjoying the great food from the Latin American and Caribbean Festival at U of Pittsburgh, but also today they all brought a recipe to share with their compañer@s. They shared the ingredients and the process to make delicacies like arepas and tostones, or delicious desserts like the rosca de reyes or the flan (custard). A big applause for Matias, who took the time to prepare empanadas with his mother and then brought them to share with everyone. Mmmm! Many people commented they were delicious ...
We also had some good riddles related to food.
After that, the kids worked in their groups to invent some new recipes and games or activities related to what they had shared at first. We had then a recipe for a cake in the form of a soccer ball, or a game called "Pass the flan," or even a food fight. We really appreciate the creativity of our young reporter@s.
Task for next Sunday: Vacations and ecosystems
Think of a place in the Hispanic world where you have gone on holiday and that you like. Why do you like this place? When were you there and with whom? What animals and plants are/ were in this place? If you can, bring to share a photo or a drawing that will show some of these animals or plants.
See you on Sunday! (At least for the kids) enjoy the week off from school!
Oh, and perhaps have noticed the new look of our blog. We'd love to know what you think, you can leave us a comment below.
