Today was the first day of Círculo Juvenil’s Fall 2016 session, ¡Cantemos!, in collaboration with Coro Latinoamericano’s CORITO, and its musical director, Adrea Araoz. While we waited for kids to arrive, we introduced ourselves and played a game of Pictionary then “Duck, Duck, Goose.” When everyone had arrived, the kids warmed up by clapping rhythms and even learned how to count different musical notes such as whole notes, half notes, and quarter notes.

The next warm up was a singing exercise going up and down the musical scales. Sometimes, the speed of the scales would change, so the kids really had to listen. After the warm ups, we listened to a villancico, (Spanish songs, carols, that are popular during the holidays) “Zagalillos,” about shepherd children. Before singing the song, the kids learned about the significance of villancicos and the song they were about to sing together. In order to learn the melody and rhythms, the kids, volunteers, and parents formed a circle and danced and clapped to the rhythms. We listened for the piano’s melody as we danced around the room. As another warm up, the kids learned “De Colores” until it was time for snack.

After snack, the kids were introduced to a new villancico, “Anton Tiruliruliru.” Again, the kids clapped different rhythms, reviewing their knowledge of reading musical notes. Together, we learned the melody one verse at time. By the end of today’s workshop, we got through three new songs!

Hoy fue el primer día de la sesión de otoño 2016 de Círculo Juvenil de Cultura, ¡Cantemos!,en colaboración con el CORITO del Coro Latinoamericano, y su directora musical Adrea Araoz. Mientras esperábamos que llegaran más niñ@s, nos presentamos y jugamos a Pictionary, y luego “Pato, pato, ganso.” Cuando ya habían llegado todos, los niñ@s entonaron, hicieron ritmos con las palmas, y hasta aprendieron a contar los tiempos de distintas notas musicales como las redondas, blancas y negras.

El próximo ejercicio de entonación fue subir y bajar las escalas musicales. A veces, la velocidad del tiempo cambiamba, entonces los niñ@s tuvieron que escuchar con mucha atención. Después de entonar, escuchamos un villancico, “Zagalillos”, sobre niñ@s pastores. Antes de cantar la canción, aprendieron sobre el significado de ‘villancicos” y la canción que iban a cantar en grupo. Para aprender la melodía y los ritmos, los niñ@os, voluntarios y padres formaron un círculo and bailaron y dieron palmas con los ritmos. Escuchamos bien la melodía del piano mientras bailamos por el cuarto. En otra entonación, los niñ@os aprendieron “De colores” hasta que llegó el momento de la merienda.

Después de la merienda, a los niñ@s se les presentó otro villancico nuevo, “Antón Tiruliruliru”. Otra vez, hicieron palmas de distintos ritmos, repasando todo lo que habían aprendido sobre las notas musicales. Juntos, aprendimos la melodía línea por línea. Para el final del taller, ¡habíamos aprendido tres nuevas canciones!
