Quinta sesión

(English text below)

This week, we focused the lesson on the end-of-year holidays Hanukkah and Christmas, and the kids came into the room ready for action! The first activity was a perfect fusion of active and educational; the kids had to jump rope to the tune of “Ocho Candelikas”, the Ladino Hanukkah song. As the kids strolled in, they immediately stood in line to attempt to reach “Ocho Candelikas” The kids and the volunteers then sat in a big circle to work on our rhythm while practicing songs. The kids and volunteers struggled with the instructor’s advanced rhythms, but, after much practice, prevailed.

The kids reviewed the activity of fast and slow music. This activity required a sensitive and attentive ear, as the speed changes were very subtle. As the piano played quickly, the kids were instructed to run quickly around the circle, dancing freely. As the piano played slowly, the kids were instructed to tip-toe around the circle, waiting for the rhythm to speed up. The volunteers scurried around the circle with the kids, some running freely and some trying to play traffic directors.

The group of kids and volunteers were split into a group and tried their best to sound like a professional choir, each singing one line at a time. The second song we sang included a solo from a brave young man whose voice complimented the holiday theme. He was very brave to sing such a big part, and he was given applause after.

The kids virtually jogged to the other room for snack. We had grapes, both green and red, croissants, pretzel sticks, and juice. While some kids talked to the volunteers, others remained in learning mode, reviewing musical notes with other kids. Afterwards we played the “Ocho Candelikas” jump rope game again. This time, we had the kids jumping over the rope rather than asking them to jump inside. After more review, the kids were dismissed to enjoy their Sunday afternoons.

See you next week!
