Todo está listo para la presentación de la obra de teatro este domingo, 1 de mayo! L@s niñ@s estarán actuando, cantando y bailando con un tema ecológico!

This Earth Day (Friday, April 22), Carnegie Mellon has reason to celebrate.
The university has been recognized by The Princeton Review and the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its leadership in environmental
research and education and for its sustainability practices, positioning CMU
among the greenest colleges and universities.

CMU will be featured in "The Princeton Review's Guide to 311 Green
Colleges," a free guidebook available for download at
http://www.princetonreview.com/green-guide.aspx that profiles the most
environmentally responsible colleges in the United States and Canada. The
schools included in the guide were chosen based on their
sustainability-related policies, practices and programs. The Princeton
Review cites CMU's robust environmental research programs, commitment to
green design and building, and dedicated Green Practices Committee among the
reasons for the university's inclusion in the listing.
 
The EPA's Green Power Partnership announced that Carnegie Mellon used the
most green power of any school in its athletic conference, the University
Athletic Association.  By purchasing close to 87 million kilowatt hours of
green power, CMU significantly bested its cohorts in the UAA, as well as
most schools in other athletic conferences. Of the participating schools,
only one other, the University of Pennsylvania, purchased more green power
than CMU.

Disfraces!

(English text below) !Sólo nos queda un domingo más para ensayar! El domingo anterior l@s chic@s trabajaron en la fabricación de sus disfraces para la obra de teatro: "La Tierra y sus amigos". Los disfraces son muy sencillos, y los están elaborando con cartón, y otros materiales (escarcha, papel aluminio, papel lustrina,cartulina de colores, listón de colores, etc.). Los personajes que van a representar son: La Tierra, Sol, luna, estrellas y gotas de agua; otros personajes son niñ@s.Vean algunas fotos.

También hicimos una "salida de campo" para aprovechar el buen tiempo y visitamos lugares en la universidad donde se ponen en práctica los principios del reciclaje y la conservación. Visitamos el "cuarto verde" en el

que se pueden reciclar diferentes materiales que normalmente no son aceptados, como zapatos, baterías, CDs, etc. Estuvimos además en un lugar creado por estudiantes que acaba de inaugurar en campus en el que la gente puede dejar productos en buen estado que ya no use para que otros los reusen: The Giving Wall. Fue muy interesante para l@s niñ@s conocer éstos espacios, llevar personalmente alguno de los materiales listados al "cuarto verde", y obtener algunos materiales para sus disfraces en el Giving Tree.

Only one more Sunday to rehearse the play! Last Sunday the kids worked in making their costumes for the play out of recycled cardboard and other materials. The characters they are representing are: the Earth, the Sun, the Moon, the Stars, and drops of water, as well as some children. See some pics.

We also went out on a "field trip" to take advantage of the gorgeous weather and to take a look at two places on campus dedicated to recycling and reusing. We visited the Green Room in which we dropped off some hard-to-recycle materials such shoes, batteries, CDs, etc. We also visited a recently launched place created by students in which people can drop off products in good condition that can be reused by others: The Giving Wall. It was interesting for the kids to get to know these places and they even got to pick some things from the Giving Tree for their costumes.

We hope to see everyone next Sunday: last chance to rehearse!

El domingo pasado estuvimos aprendiendo y bailando una canción que habla sobre cuidar nuestro planeta. Durante los próximos días l@s niños la escucharán y la practicarán nuevamente y seguirán preparando la obra de teatro que presentarán el último domingo del taller. Le seguiremos contando sobre esto.

Canciones Ecológicas

¿Recuerdan los instrumentos que l@s niñ@s crearon la semana pasada con materiales reciclables? Pues esta semana emplearon esos instrumentos para acompañar las canciones que crearon sobre un tema relacionado con la ecología y el cuidado de nuestro mundo. Luego de ver algunos modelos de videos y canciones de esta índole, procedieron a emplear sus conocimientos y creatividad para escribir las letras de las canciones con ayuda de los asistentes universitarios. Aprovechando el tiempo soleado y el incremento en la temperatura, realizaron esta parte de la actividad afuera, antes de regresar al salón para compartir sus canciones con l@s demás participantes del taller. Remember the instruments the kids created last week with recyclable materials? This week they used these instruments to accompany songs they created on a topic related to ecology and the care of our world. After watching some model videos and songs of this kind, they proceeded to use their knowledge and creativity to write the lyrics of the songs with the help of the university student assistants. Taking advantage of the sunny weather and the increase in temperature, this part of the activity was done outside, before returning to the classroom to share their music with other workshop participants. Río enfermo

El domingo anterior l@s niñ@s iniciaron con la archi-conocida ronda de los elefantes como calentamiento.  A continuación realizaron una actividad llamada “Río enfermo”, en la que el objetivo era simular lo que pasa con la vida de los peces cuando el río está enfermo (contaminado) y reflexionar sobre qué podemos hacer para ayudarlo. Luego de esta actividad, y después de disfrutar de su merienda, en grupitos crearon instrumentos musicales a partir de materiales reciclables, que luego presentaron a sus compañer@s. Además de darnos una muestra de su gran creatividad, l@s niñ@s nos siguen demostrando su conciencia y compromiso con el planeta en que vivimos.

Last Sunday the kids started with the song and the game of “The Elephants”. They then performed an activity called "Sick river", in which the objective was to simulate what happens to the life of the fish when the river is sick (polluted) and reflect on what we can do to help. After the activity, and after enjoying a snack, in small groups they created musical instruments from recyclable materials, which were then presented to the rest of the participants. Besides giving us a sample of their creativity, the kids continue to demonstrate their awareness and commitment to the planet we live on.

El domingo anterior l@s chic@s participantes en el taller se dedicaron de lleno al tema del reciclaje. Luego de un divertido juego de "características"  en el que practicaron vocabulario de diversas categorías relacionadas con el ambiente, intentaron como grupo a ubicar plantas y animales en su entorno natural a través de un videojuego. A continuación, y luego de compartir la merienda, en pequeños grupos construyeron y decoraron contenedores para distintos tipos de materiales reciclables. Una vez finalizada esta actividad, trabajaron nuevamente en grupos para organizar una montaña de materiales reciclables y depositarlos en los contenedores correspondientes. Vean el video!

Last Sunday the kids were devoted completely to the issue of recycling. After a fun game of "features" in which various categories of vocabulary related to the environment were practiced, as a group they tried to relocate plants and animals in their natural environment through a videogame. Next, after sharing the snack, working in small groups they built and decorated containers for different types of recyclable materials. After this activity, they again worked in groups to sort through a mountain of recyclables and deposit them in the appropriate containers. Watch the video!

El agua y los ecosistemas

El domingo anterior l@s niñ@s continuaron en el proceso de conocerse y de explorar su conocimiento sobre la ecología, prestando atención al daño que hacemos al contaminar el agua y desperdiciarla, así como la relevancia que tienen las distintas poblaciones de árboles en nuestros parques y bosques.

Al comienzo de la sesión, hubo un juego de “papa caliente” en el que l@s niñ@s debían dar su nombre, su edad, y contar sobre lo que hacen para cuidar el planeta. Luego, en una actividad que les involucró mucho, trabajaron en equipos compartiendo las adivinanzas sobre animales, frutas y verduras que trajeron de sus casas con los demás equipos, obteniendo puntos por cada acierto.

Luego de la merienda, con ayuda de l@s estudiantes universitari@s crearon y presentaron en grupos a l@s demás participantes del taller un collage con animales, plantas y características existentes en cada uno de los hábitats que les fueron asignados por la maestra. Finalmente, aprovechando el buen tiempo, salieron al patio para correr un poco y jugar al juego de arbolitos, leñadores y guardabosques, uno muy similar al juego de pillar, “la lleva” o “la mancha” congelada, con el enfoque puesto en la ecología. La sesión se cerró con una recapitulación de vocabulario aprendido.

Dear parents,

 

Last Sunday we continued in the process of knowing each other and exploring their knowledge of ecology, with attention to the damage performed when we pollute and waste the water, as well as the importance of different populations of trees in our parks and forests.
At the beginning of the session, there was a game of hot potato where the kids had to give their name, age, and tell about what they do to protect the planet. Then, in an activity that got their attention, the kids worked in teams to share with other teams the riddles about animals, fruits and vegetables brought from home, earning points for each correct answer.
After the snack, the kids worked in groups, with help from the assistant college students.  They created and presented to other participants of the workshop a collage of animals, plants and characteristics for each one of the habitats they were assigned by the teacher. Finally, taking advantage of the weather, they ran outside a bit and play the game of “trees, loggers and rangers”, one very similar to the game of "it", with the focus placed on ecology. The session closed with a recap of vocabulary.

How are the seeds sown in the first session doing? Perhaps some have already begun to sprout? Please remind your children to care for the plants at home until the end of the spring workshop, giving them a few drops of water every other day, and lots of light.
