El evento que realizamos este domingo pasado fue genial. Para empezar el evento, tuvimos que esperar que llegaran l@s niñ@s para poder llevarl@s al MLRC. Después todos nos presentamos. Aunque algunos de ell@s eran tímidos, tod@s se presentaron antes de comenzar el evento y esto ayudó a que también se sintieran más cómod@s consigo mism@s. Durante las presentaciones, se notó que algun@s niñ@s disfrutaron mucho al conocer a otr@s de sus propios países y que tuvieron orgullo de tener esas herencias. En general, estaban muy entusiasmad@s por aprender más sobre el espacio. Algo que funcionó durante el evento fue que se dividió en tres partes. Dividimos el grupo en tres equipos para cada actividad. Esto ayudó a administrar pequeños equipos y fue una manera eficiente para poder completar las actividades. Las tres actividades fueron jeopardy, hacer constelaciones con pretzels y malvaviscos, y hacer slime. Cada actividad actuó como una “misión” que los niños tenían que completar para avanzar al próximo cuarto. En general, completar las actividades les permitió arreglar su nave espacial de “Scotty 22”.
Al terminar la segunda actividad, l@s niñ@s salieron a tomar un descanso y fue tiempo de la merienda. Ahí había una variedad de alimentos, incluyendo plátanos, jugo, mazapanes, bimbuñuelos, leche de fresa y chocolate, y picnics (galletas rellenas de chocolate). Como predijimos, la merienda fue muy popular entre l@s niñ@s (y entre l@s estudiantes de este curso). Más tarde, Angie dio una breve presentación sobre su pasantía con la NASA y l@s niños parecían muy interesad@s. Para concluir el evento, les dimos las gracias a tod@s l@s participantes, les dimos medallas, y les llevamos a esperar a sus padres.

Durante el evento el lenguaje y la cultura fueron aspectos muy importantes. Por ejemplo, cuando algun@s de l@s chic@s y/o uno de nosotros indicamos que éramos de países de Latinoamérica, l@s niños se emocionaron, ya que también se identificaban con estas identidades. El español también jugó un papel fundamental porque esto ayudó a comunicarnos con algun@s de l@s niñ@s y ayudó a que practicaran su español. Durante el taller de constelaciones, l@s niñ@s mayores hablaron sobre sus experiencias y conocimientos. De manera similar, durante Jeopardy, a much@s niñ@s les gustó insertar sus propios conocimientos de los lugares, personas, y hechos presentados en el juego. Por ejemplo, una de las niñas indicó los proyectos diferentes que hizo relacionados con la ciencia. Tratamos de preguntarles sobre ellos para mantener la conversación y aumentar su confianza en sí mismos. Los chicos compartieron sus experiencias y hechos divertidos de las categorías también. A much@s de l@s niñ@s (de todas edades) les gustó mucho el taller de slime. Después de añadir todos los ingredientes y cuando el slime empezó a formar, varias veces gritaron “¡a mí me encanta la ciencia!!” o “sí, esto es ciencia!!”, mostrando su interés y entusiasmo por la ciencia, lo cual era una de nuestras metas del evento. ¡Siendo que l@s chicos tuvieron la oportunidad de identificarse con la cultura hispana, conocer a otr@s chicos hispan@s, practicar su español, y ser científic@s, diremos que este evento fue un éxito; misión cumplida!

Our event that was held this past Sunday went well. Before the event started, we had to wait for the kids to arrive before taking them to the MLRC. The first thing we did was introduce ourselves. Even though some kids were shy, they all introduced themselves before the event started, which helped them become more comfortable with one another. During the introduction, we noticed that some kids enjoyed meeting other kids from their own countries and that they were proud of their heritage. In general, the children were excited to learn about space. Something that worked during the event was that it was divided into three main parts. We also divided the kids into three teams. This helped us administer small teams so that we could complete the activities efficiently. The three activities consisted of playing jeopardy, creating constellations with pretzels and marshmallows, and making slime. Each activity served as a “mission” that the children had to complete before moving to the next activity. Completing the activities helped them fix their spaceship, “Scotty 22.”
When the children finished the second activity, they took a break and had a snack. There was a variety of snacks, including bananas, juice, mazapanes, bimbuñuelos, strawberry milk, chocolate milk, and chocolate wafers. We anticipated that snack time would be very popular among the kids (and the students taking the course). Later, Angie gave a brief presentation about her internship at NASA, and the children were very interested in the topic. To conclude the event, we thanked the participants, gave them medals, and took them to wait for their parents.

During the event, language and culture were important aspects. For example, when some children and/or some of us indicated that we were from countries in Latin America, the children were excited because they identified with these identities. Spanish also played an important role because it allowed us to communicate with some children and helped others practice their Spanish. During the constellation workshop, the older children spoke about their experiences and knowledge. For instance, one of the girls indicated that she had completed several projects related to science. We tried asking them questions about themselves to keep them engaged in the conversation and help them become more confident in themselves. The children also shared their experiences and fun facts about the different categories of jeopardy. Many of them (all ages included) enjoyed the slime workshop. After they added all the ingredients together, slime started to form, some children exclaimed “I love science!” or “Yes, this is science!” This showed us their interest and enthusiasm for science, which was one of the goals of our events. Since the children had the opportunity to identify with the Hispanic culture, meet other Hispanic children, practice their Spanish, we will say that this event was a success; mission accomplished!
Overall, we think that the event was great, and we will use what we learned for our next events.
