10. Sesión final

Nos reunimos el domingo pasado para la última sesión del Taller de otoño del Círculo Juvenil este semestre, y lo celebramos con una fiesta.



Este semestre, trabajamos durante ocho sesiones experimentando con maneras de narrar historias usando diferentes medios como los comics, el teatro, los títeres, y los medios digitales. El domingo quisimos mostrarle a las familias y a la comunidad un poco del trabajo que hicimos.

Empezamos preparando la sala para los padres. L@s voluntari@s pusieron las obras de l@s niñ@s alrededor de la sala, incluyendo sus cómics, títeres, y otras cosas creativas que hicieron a lo largo del taller. ¡Y por supuesto, la máquina! Tuvimos un poco de dificultad con el ensamblaje, especialmente con la parte del avión, pero finalmente, funcionó. Cuando los padres llegaron, los líderes introdujeron las obras presentadas, y entonces los padres tuvieron la oportunidad de explorar con sus niños el trabajo realizado. Tuvimos una demostración fantástica de las obras de teatro de títeres, además de unas presentaciones del programa de Scratch. Después de estas presentaciones, nos reunimos para compartir una merienda final con los padres, donde todos los miembros del Círculo recibieron un regalo, y los niños recibieron certificados, también. Fue una clausura perfecta para un semestre muy divertido.  (resumen en video abajo)

Last Sunday, we met for the last Circulo Juvenil session of the semester, which we celebrated with a party. We started by preparing the room for the parents.

This semester, we had worked for eight weeks, experimenting how to narrate our stories using different media like comics, drama, puppets, and digital media. Last Sunday we wanted to show the families and the community a bit of the work we had done.
 The volunteers put up the kids’ work around the room, including their comics, puppets, and other creative projects. And, of course, the machine! We had some difficulty with the assembly of the machine, especially with the airplane, but finally it worked. When the parents arrived, the leaders of Circulo introduced the featured works, and then the parents had an opportunity to explore with their kids. We had a fantastic performance of the puppet theaters, as well as a few presentations of the programming tool, Scratch. After these performances, we had a final snack with the parents, where every member of Circulo received a gift, and the kids were given certificates as well. It was a great end to a very fun semester!



We only have expressions of gratitude for the kids, their families, our team of instructors and volunteers, and all the people who have collaborated to make this semester's workshop possible. Thank you also to the Department of Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon for all the support they have given our program over the years.

7a sesión: Hummingbird

Esta semana, trabajamos con el Hummingbird Robotics Kit, un programa desarrollado pro investigadores de Carnegie Mellon. Hummingbird se utiliza para hacer robots, esculturas cinéticas y animatronics que son construidos con las piezas del kit y materiales artesanales. En el inicio de la sesión, l@s niñ@s tomaron dos minutos para dibujar robots que preparaban comida y darles un nombre. Después, unos compartieron voluntariamente sus dibujos. Un niño dibujó un robot que respiraba fuego para cocinar comidas, ¡qué interesante!

Después, fuimos al cuarto de computadora, y los materiales de Hummingbird fueron organizados. Cada pareja de niñ@s necesitaba un controlador, un LED de tres colores, una fuente de poder, un cable de USB, y un motor servo HS-311. Dependiendo de los experimentos que los niños estaban realizando, cada pareja recibió un sensor de luz o un sensor de temperatura.

Ellos conectaron sus piezas en sus computadoras y abrieron el programa “CREATE Lab Visual Programmer”. Visual Programmer utiliza un enfoque de “story-boarding” para la programación. La interfaz le permite crear expresiones, y cuando varias expresiones se han construido, se puede crear una secuencia que utiliza estas expresiones para hacer una programa. Los niños tenían algunos problemas, así que tomaron un descanso para meriendas. Luego, fuimos afuera y corrimos un poco. Cuando regresamos al cuarto de computadora, trabajamos con Hummingbird un poco más. ¡Esperamos que los niños se sigan divirtiendo con Hummingbird la próxima semana!

This week we worked with the Hummingbird Kit, a program developed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon. Hummingbird is used to make robots, animatronics, and kinetic art by combining the parts of the kit with other arts and crafts materials. At the start of the session, the kids took a few minutes to draw out food-making robots and name them. Some volunteered to share their robots with the rest of us. One robot blew fire to cook the food!

Then, we went to the computer lab and pairs of kids worked with a hummingbird kit together. Everyone had a control board, a tri-color LED light, a power cable, a USB cable and a motor servo HS-311. Depending on their interest, each pair also got a light or temperature sensor. They put the kits together and used the program "CREATE Lab Visual Programmer." This program uses pre-built expressions to create sequences that make a program for the kit. Once we got the hang of making sequences, we had a snack and went outside to enjoy the weather. Then we returned to the computer lab so the kids could incorporate the sensors into the programs they had written. We hope they'll build more on these skills next week!

Segunda sesión

Esta semana continuamos explorando la interface de Scratch que empezamos a usar la semana pasada. Antes de mostrarles como usar las herramientas interactivas, l@s niñ@s nos recordaron que ya sabían usarlas. Vimos varios videos cortos que nos mostraron cómo agregar y mover Sprites (caricaturas que se pueden animar), y agregar imágenes de fondo, sonidos, y texto a los proyectos. Después de ver los videos trabajamos juntos para proponer ideas de tradiciones y fiestas de la primavera. Una de las ideas fue el carnaval. Después creamos una tarjeta de carnaval juntos en Scratch. Todos contribuyeron sus opiniones.

Después de la merienda, cada chic@ creó su propia tarjeta. Comenzamos por crear cuentas personales en Scratch. Usando las ideas que habían dibujado en sus libretas l@s niñ@s crearon una tarjeta de primavera. ¡Todos los proyectos les salieron muy bien! Algun@os dibujaron sus propios Sprites, mientras que otr@s bajaron imágenes que les gustaban del internet. Crearon historias de dragones, jugadores de fútbol, tortas de cumpleaños, y robots. También les agregaron texto, sonido, y movimiento para hacerlas mas dinámicas. Los últimos 10 minutos los dedicamos a que voluntariamente compartieran sus creaciones con sus amig@s.

In this week’s session of “Sueños digitales,” we continued exploring the Scratch program, which had been introduced to the children last week. Before showing how the interactive tools worked, the children reminded us what they had already learned. Then, several short videos were played, demonstrating how to add and move Sprites (animated objects like cartoon cats), and how to add background, sound and text to the projects. After watching the clips, the children got excited and enthusiastic about using Scratch. Before we let them explore the program on their own, we first did a group activity. The theme of the activity was spring, and everyone worked together to brainstorm springtime traditions or events celebrated in the Hispanic world. We eventually settled on Carnaval. Hands flew in the air, volunteering to help create the card, and those who didn’t go up all contributed with their opinions.

After snack time, the children moved to the computer room for the individual activity. This was the chance to create personal accounts on Scratch, and implement ideas they had drawn in their notepads. Once again, the plan was to create cards depicting a springtime festival or holiday, but the main purpose was to get the children comfortable with using Scratch. In the end, all of them created impressive projects! They were drawing their own Sprites, uploading unique pictures from the Internet, and creating stories with dragons, football players, birthday cakes and robots. The children included texts and sounds that would appear once a user hit “go,” and some projects had multiple changing backgrounds. The final 10-15 minutes was a time of sharing, and those who wanted to share their projects had the opportunity to do so.

El domingo de pascua l@s chic@s aprovecharon el lindo día para estar afuera, correr, y buscar huevos de pascua (y su merienda). Fue un pequeño ritual para recibir a la primavera, que conectaba muy bien con la idea de hablar sobre la naturaleza, las plantas y los animales de sitios del mundo hispano en que han estado de vacaciones. Como parte del trabajo, ell@s mismos crearon relatos e ilustraciones de esos sitios, dejando volar la imaginación como es costumbre.

Esta semana la tarea engancha un poco con la de la semana pasada porque también habla de flora y fauna, pero esta vez en onda ecológica. El tema de la sesió de este domingo será:

¿Cómo podemos mejorar el medioambiente?

Los niños deben traer una imagen de un diario o revista o sacar una fotografía de algo que creen que no es bueno para la tierra y traer ideas de cómo solucionarlo.

Durante la sesion del taller haremos una lista de recomendaciones para mejorar el medioambiente.

On Easter Sunday the kids took advantage of the beautiful day to be outside. They ran and looked for Easter eggs (and a snack). It was a small ritual to welcome spring, and it connected well with the idea of talking about nature, plants and animals in the places of the Hispanic world where they have been on vacation. As part of the work they created stories and illustrations of these sites, letting their imagination fly as usual.

This week the homework links a bit to last week's because it also relates to flora and fauna, but this time with relation to ecology. The theme of this Sunday's session will be:

How can we improve the environment?

Children must bring a newspaper or magazine picture or draw a picture of something they think is not good for the earth and bring ideas of how to fix it.

During the session of the workshop we will make a list of recommendations to improve the environment.
