[English text below] Gracias a todos los que asistieron a nuestra presentación el sábado 6 de junio en la biblioteca pública de Beechview. Fue una buena oportunidad no sólo de empezar ponernos en contacto con algunas familias hispanas de esta comunidad, mostrándoles un poco el trabajo que hicieron los niños en el taller pasado, sino además de conocer esta biblioteca y su colección de materiales en español. Esperamos que en el futuro podamos seguir colaborando con la biblioteca y con otros lugares en Beechview para hacer eventos y mini-talleres directamente en su comunidad.

Gracias además a Tina y a Rosi por toda su ayuda, y a CGF por su pesencia en representación de los niños del taller y por las fotografías que tomó.

Thanks to all who attended our presentation on Saturday, June 6th at the Carnegie Public Library in Beechview. It was a great opportunity for us not only to get in contact with some of the Hispanic/Latin@ families in this community, and to show some of the work the children made during the past workshop, but also to get to know the branch library and its collection of materials in Spanish. We hope to keep collaborating in the future with the library and others n Beechview and perhaps get to do some events and mini-workshops right in this community.
Special thanks to Tina and Rosi for all their help, and to CGF for being there in representation of the children and for taking the pictures used in this entry.

Al servicio de la comunidad
Fue un placer verlos y ver la gran cantidad de organizaciones trabajando con la comunidad latina/hispana en Pittsburgh. Presentamos ejemplos de los trabajos que los niños han hecho (la obra de teatro y la última película) y dimos un poco de información sobre el próximo taller que empezará en septiembre (por más información contactar a Felipe Gómez fgomez@andrew.cmu.edu o a Kenya Dworkin kdworkin@andrew.cmu.edu).

Evaluaciones y próximos eventos

Muchas gracias a todos por su asistencia y contribucion para el evento del sAbado anterior en la biblioteca pUblica de Oakland. Tuvimos algunos inconvenientes con la tecnologia que afortunadamente pudimos resolver con ayuda del personal de la biblioteca.AsI, logramoas mostrar a los que asistieron el valioso trabajo realizado por los chicos con ayuda de sus maestr@s este semestre. Las familias que asistieron recibieron una copia en DVD del cortometraje, ademAs de una evaluaciOn individualizada del progreso de cada chico y una evaluaciOn general del taller que les rogamos diligenciar y enviar tan pronto como les sea posible (las familias que no pudieron asistir estarAn recibiendo estos materiales por correo). Para mayor facilidad de los que prefieren enviar la evaluaciOn del taller de manera electrOnica, la hemos enviado tambiEn de manera adjunta en un correo electrOnico. Favor diligenciarla y enviarla a machugar@andrew.cmu.edu.

Estaremos presentando nuevamente el cortometraje el evento "Al servicio de la comunidad" el 31 de mayo y en la biblioteca pUblica de Beechview el 6 de junio a las 11am. Como siempre, nos encantaría que pudieran acompañarnos con sus hijos, amigos y conocidos para que otros puedan conocer a los directores, actores y creadores de esta obra.

Many thanks to all who attended and joined us at the event last Saturday at the Oakland Public Library. Despite some technical difficulties, we were able to show the audience the great work accomplished this term by your sons and daughters with the guidance of their teachers. Those who attended received a copy of the DVD, an individual evaluation of progress for their kid(s), and a general evaluation form for the workshop, which we ask you to please fill out and submit as soon as possible (materials are being sent via snail mail to those who were not able to be there). We have also attached the workshop evaluation to an email for those who would rather send it electronically to machugar@andrew.cmu.edu.

We will be screening the film once again at the "Al servicio de la comunidad" event on May 31st and at the Beechview public library on June 6th, 11am. As always, we would love to have you attend these venues with your kids, friends, and acquaintances so that others may have the chance to meet the creators, directors, and actors/actresses of the film.


Thank you all for your support of the bilingual skills and creativity of these amazing kids.

El lobo, el elefante y el rey

Durante la última sesión del taller de primavera, los chicos mostraron a sus padres y familiares la primera versiOn editada del cortometraje que han realizado: "El lobo, el elefante y el rey". Gracias a todos los que pudieron asistir para acompañarnos en felicitar a los chicos por el gran trabajo que completaron y a sus maestr@s y asistentes por el apoyo brindado.
Una versión editada del corto con banda sonora y subtítulos se ha estado y se estará presentando en diferentes lugares de la ciudad durante las próximas semanas. Estuvimos en el Latino Arts Festival el 2 de mayo y estaremos en la biblioteca pública de Oakland este próximo 16 de mayo a las 11:30. Más información sobre las próximas presentaciones en la imagen. Nos encantaría que pudieran acompañarnos con sus hijos, amigos y conocidos para que otros de los asistentes puedan conocer a los directores, actores y creadores de esta obra.

During the last session of our Spring workshop, the kids invited their parents and relatives to see the first cut of their short film: "The Wolf, the Elephant, and the King". Thanks to all who attended and joined us in congratulating the kids for their wonderful work, as well as thanking their teachers and assistants.
A new edited version of the film, featuring music and English subtitles, has been and will continue being screened in the next weeks. We were present at the Latino Arts Festival on May 2 and will be screening the film at the Oakland Public Library at 11:30 am on May 16. More information on upcoming events is found in the poster. We'd love to have you attend these venues with your kids, friends, and acquaintances so that others may have the chance to meet the true creators, directors, and actors/actresses of the film.

Latinoamericano in their Spring Concert at the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium 7:30pm
(free to students and children, otherwise donations are appreciated) .   Their
presentation is named Latin American Spring and features music by Argentinean
composer Ariel Ramirez, which uses Andean themes.   Coro will be playing with
musical guest Musuhallpa on the Andean instruments.


“5 de Mayo Mexican Party”

As usual we will have great  dance demonstrations and  our first ever
Mariachi  contest, (bring your Mexican karaoke CD and sing  along with us)
raffles, piñata and very good dinner by Mexico City restaurants.
Two great music bands are coming to bring the best of their repertory; the folkloric
band Musuhalpa & the Latin Jazz of Puro Queso.

The entrance is free and we’ll open at 5 pm, dinner/buffet will be ready at 5:30
(only $8 dollars  per  person). Don’t forget that after this event we continue
the dance with the authentic Cuban Salsa band Guaracha performing from 10 pm to 1
am,
at the Altar Bar in the strip district too
(just minutes away from the Contemporary Craft).

Creación de un mini-metraje

(English text below)

El domingo anterior los niños crearon la historia que se convertirá en el minimetraje. Eligieron los personajes desde el grupo de títeres de dedos que les mostramos, elaboraron la estructura básica de la historia y dibujaron los fondos que correspondieron a los lugares donde se desenvuelven los personajes.
La profesora hizo una composición con los dibujos y los títeres para que los niños vieran algo de la historia y cuánto más se puede agregar.
Hoy, los niños vieron esta composición, recordaron la historia y seleccionaron la música que identificará a sus personajes y a ciertos momentos del cuento. Además desarrollaron más las historias específicas de algunos de los personajes y dibujaron más fondos. Con todos los dibujos terminados, reorganizaron el argumento.
Para la próxima semana los niños deben pensar en las características de personalidad de sus personajes, qué dicen y cómo hablan porque empezaremos a filmar.

Last Sunday the children had created the story that will turn into the mini-film. They selected characters among the finger puppets we showed them, gave the story a basic structure, and drew backgrounds corresponding to the places where the actions take place. The teacher made assembled the drawings and puppets for the kids to see part of the story and how much more can be added.

This past Sunday, the kids saw a photographic montage of what the teacher did, remembered the story, and selected the music which will identify their characters and certain moments in the story. They also developed some of the characters a bit more and drew a few more backgrounds. When all the drawings were ready, they reorganized the plot.

For next Sunday, the children will think about the personality of their characters, what they will say, and how they will talk, because we will start filming.

El diario La Jornada Latina publicó un artículo sobre el Primer Festival de Cortometraje Animado para Niños, realizado por El Circulo el pasado 8 de marzo. Pueden ver el artículo en la página 40 de la edición de abril.

Pittsburgh's Hispanic newspaper La Jornada Latina published an article on the First Festival of Short Animated Films for Children, organized by El Circulo this past March 8th. The article can be read on page 40 of the April edition.

Exposicion y charla sobre arquitectura mexicana

Juan O'Gorman , Mexican Modernism and Pittsburgh

Junto con la exposición del Laboratorio de arquitectura de Fernando Romero el curador Raymund Ryan discutirá la obra de otro arquitecto y muralista mexicano visionario, Juan O'Gorman.  También se tratará la obra de artistas plásticos mexicanos de los años 1930 y 40 (Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo). El profesor Hilary Masters revelará la conexión entre O'Gorman y Pittsburgh.

"La unión hace la fuerza"

En la sesión del 1 de marzo, los chicos repasaron los tipos de planos cinematográficos, ahora con nombres.
Luego, intentaron encontrar la estructura de una historia, fijándose en la presentación del lugar y los personajes, el problema (la aventura) y los intentos por resolverlo hasta llegar a la solución o final de la aventura. Para hacer esto recordaron a Papelucho (video). Finalmente, trabajaron en sus propias historias pensando en la estructura y apoyándose en los dibujos del guión gráfico de la película "Vara de alto, legua de largo y ojo de fuego" con el mensaje "La unión hace la fuerza".

On March 1st, the children reviewed different types of film shots and angles, assigning them names. They then tried to find the structure of a story, taking into account the presentation of time and place, the problem (adventure), and the attempts to solve the problem until reaching a resolution. They did this remembering Papelucho (video). Finally, they worked on their own stories keeping in mind the structure and using the screen play from the short film "Vara de alto, legua de largo y ojo de fuego" whose message was "in unity there's strentgh".

Muchas gracias a todos por su colaboración en la organización y participación en el primer mini-festival de cortos latinoamericanos para niños. Tuvimos alrededor de 30 personas en el evento, incluyendo a familias que no son hispano hablantes. Las películas fueron presentadas por una breve introducción de Felipe explicando un poco sobre el contenido. Durante la proyección los participantes pudieron completar unas actividades de vocabulario y cultura relacionadas con los cortos. Al final el público votó por el mejor corto y el mejor mini. Los premios "Minis" fueron a Pedro y el lobo (una coproducción mexicana europea) y El soldado Trifaldón (de Tikitiklip, Chile). 

Esperamos que este evento se convierta en una nueva tradición de nuestra comunidad.

Thanks so much to everyone for their contributions to the organization and participation in the first mini-film festival of Latinamerican shorts for children. We had around 30 people attending the event, including non Spanish speaking families. The movies were briefly introduced by Felipe giving some background about the content of the shorts. During the screening the participants were able to complete some vocabulary and culture activities related to the short films. At the end the audience voted to award the Mini awards to the best short film and the best mini film. The "Minis" went to Pedro y el lobo (a Mexican and European coproduction) and to El soldado Trifaldón (from Tikitiklips, Chile).

We hope this event becomes a new tradition in our community.
