Primera sesión: bomba y plena

Nuestra primera sesión estuvo llena de alegría! Fue un placer ver nuevamente a l@s chic@s que nos han acompañado en talleres anteriores y conocer a algun@s nuev@s amig@s.
Luego de conocernos y jugar el juego de las sillas musicales y de categorías, tuvimos la oportunidad de aprender un poco de la historia de la música y la percusión en el Caribe gracias a una artista local, Geña. Con ayuda de ella también aprendimos a bailar algunos pasos de la bomba y la plena puertorriqueñas! Durante la merienda también vimos algunos divertidos videos de personas y personajes de Sesame Street tocando y bailando estos ritmos. Lo disfrutamos mucho. Les esperamos el próximo domingo, cuando aprenderemos un poco sobre bailes folclóricos de las regiones de México.

Our first session was filled with happiness! It was a pleasure to see once again our old friends, and to meet new ones.
After getting to know each other, and playing the juego de las sillas musicales and "categorías," we had the chance to learn a bit about the history of music and percussion in the Caribbean thanks to a local artist, Geña. With her help we also learned to dance the basics of two Puerto Rican rhythms: bomba and plena puertorriqueñas! During the snack we also saw some fun videos of people and Sesame Street monsters playing and dancing to these rythms. We had lots of fun. Taller de primavera!

Nos estamos preparando para iniciar un nuevo taller! Esta vez el tema será el baile y la expresión corporal, como siempre enfocados en el mantenimiento y el desarrollo del español y de las conexiones con las raíces y las tradiciones hispanas/latinas. Iniciaremos el domingo 2 de marzo. Esperamos a tod@s l@s niñ@s hispanohablantes de la región de Pittsburgh!

We are getting ready to start a new workshop! This time around we will follow the theme of dance and body language, as usual focusing on the maintenance and development of the Spanish language and the connections with Latin@/Hispanic roots and traditions. The workshop will start on Sunday March 2nd. We invite all Spanish-speaking children ages 6-12 in the Pittsburgh region!

El domingo anterior tuvimos nuestra última sesión del taller "En comunidad" para este semestre. La sesión misma se desarrolló con tranquilidad, con los chicos alternando entre el diseño y la fabricación de un banderín con la técnica de esténcil liderada por la madre de uno de nuestros participantes, y una actividad de percusión, cante y baile liderado por la artista Geña. Para terminar, inspirados por el espíritu de la época, hicimos una lectura comunitaria de un libro que contiene un cuento y un poco de historia sobre la celebración de Acción de Gracias. A continuación procedimos a darles las gracias y un certificado a todos los niños participantes, los ayudantes voluntarios, y los demás miembros de la comunidad que de una u otra manera se hicieron presentes para colaborar con el desarrollo del taller. Extendimos también las gracias a los generosos patrocinadores de este taller, Vibrant Pittsburgh, Center for Health Equity at the University of Pittsburgh, and Dick Tucker y el Departamento de Lenguas Modernas de Carnegie Mellon University. Terminamos con una gran merienda en la que disfrutamos de varios platillos que generosamente prepararon y contribuyeron las familias. 

 
Queremos agradecer nuevamente la participación de las familias y sus chicos en este taller. Fue un placer haber podido compartir esta experiencia con los talentos de nuestra comunidad. Les deseamos lo mejor para este día de Acción de Gracias y las fiestas. Esperamos verlos el próximo semestre.

Last Sunday we held the last session for the "En comunidad" workshop for this term. The session itself was quite relaxed, with the kids alternating between two activities: making their own designs and printing them on cloth to make flags with a stencil technique under the direction of the mother of one of our participants, and a percussion, song, and dance activity  led by the artist Geña. Toward the end, and inspired by the spirit of the season, we had a communal reading of a book containing a short illustrated story and some history of the Thanksgiving celebration.  We then naturally gave thanks and a certificate to each and every one of the kids, the volunteer assistants, and all other members of the community who in some way or another made the workshop possible. Our thanks also included the generous sponsors, Vibrant Pittsburgh, the Center for Health Equity at the University of Pittsburgh, and Dick Tucker and the Modern Languages Department at Carnegie Mellon University. We closed with a great snack in which we had the chance to enjoy a series of dishes generously prepared and shared by the families. 

  We want to thank you once more for your participation and that of your children in this workshop. It was a pleasure to be able to share this experience with the talents of our community. We wish you the best for Thanksgiving and the coming holiday season. We hope to see you again next semester.

Octava Sesión: Tambores

Para prepararse para la Acción de Gracias, los chicos aprendieron sobre una celebración similar, incluyendo cómo bailar, cantar, y tocar instrumentos para los festivos en Venezuela gracias a Mayela de Latina Productions. También pasaron por el grupo, preguntando a qué le dan gracias.

Jugaron muchos diferentes juegos, como Teléfono roto. Aprendieron a tocar ritmos en los tambores y otros instrumentos durante una buena parte de la sesión antes de la merienda.

Todos tocando instrumentos!

Durante la merienda cantaron Cielito Lindo y De Colores. Después, participaron en una danza de Venezuela. Todos lo disfrutaron mucho!
El próximo domingo es nuestra última sesión del año! Los esperamos!

In preparation for Thanksgiving, the kids learned about a similar celebration, including how to dance, sing, and play the instruments iduring the festivities in Venezuela thanks to Mayela from Latina Productions. They also went around saying what they were grateful for.

They played many different games, including "Telephone". They learned how to play some rhythms on the drums and other instruments during a good part of the session before the snack.

During the snack, the sang "Cielito lindo" and "De colores". In the second hour, they participated in a dance from Venezuela. They all enjoyed it very much! 

Next Sunday is our last session this year. We look forward to seeing you!

Séptima sesión: baile y manualidades!

El domingo anterior los chicos tuvieron la oportunidad de balancear el trabajo físico con el mental y la motricidad fina. Latina Productions se hizo presente en nuestro taller para hacer un trabajo con relación a la música y los tambores que fue desde pintar y decorar imágenes de tambores, caracolas y maracas, hasta aprender algunos bailes basados en la percusión.

Simultáneamente, la madre de uno de nuestros participantes, quien es diseñadora y artista, dirigió a un grupo de chicos en la creación de sus obras de papel picado. Last Sunday the kids had the chance to balance physical activity with some fine motricity activities. Latina Productions was present at our workshop guiding work related to music and drums ranging from coloring and decorating images of drums, seashells, and maracas, to learning some dances based on percussion rhythms.

Simultaneously, the mother of one of our participants, who is a designer and an artist, directed a group of the kids in the making of works of papel picado. Sexta sesión: Miscelánea

El domingo anterior fue muy entretenido con una sesión de música mexicana liderada por una estudiante voluntaria y violinista de CMU, y unos muy divertidos ejercicios de expresión corporal ofrecidos por una bailarina profesional, quien es además la mamá de una de nuestras participantes. Para completar, también nos dedicamos a la construcción de juguetes de madera con invitados de Home Depot. Un resumen en video se puede encontrar en este enlace. 

El próximo domingo vamos a tener las artesanías en tela ofrecidas por una diseñadora textil y artista quien es también la mamá de uno de nuestros participantes. Además tendremos la primera de dos sesiones de baile y actuación con Latina Productions.

Dear families,

Our last session was very entertaining with Mexican music led by a CMU student volunteer and violinist, super fun exercises of free expression and dance with a professional dancer who is the mom of one of our participants, and also the construction of wooden toys with Home Depot guests. There is a short video summary in this link. 

For next Sunday, we will have textile craft making with a professional textile designer who is also the mom of one of our participants, and we'll enjoy the first of two sessions on dance and performance led by Latina Productions. 

Quinta sesión: fútbol!

En la sesión del domingo anterior tuvimos nuevamente el placer de ser dirigidos por Hernán Maldonado, un miembro de nuestra comunidad. Hernán preparó juegos y actividades relacionadas con el fútbol para compartir con l@s chic@s. Jóvenes y adultos nos divertimos mucho! En este enlace pueden ver un resumen en video de lo que ocurrió.
Al final de la sesión l@s chic@s realizaron una manualidad para prepararse para las celebraciones del Día de los muertos. 
Muchas gracias además a la familia que compartió la merienda para que l@s chic@s recargaran sus energías.

Last Sunday we had once again the pleasure of being led by Hernán Maldonado, a member of our community. Hernán prepared games and activities related to fútbol (soccer) to share with the kids. Young and old had lots of fun! You can click on this link to see a video summary of what went on.

At the end of the session the kids engaged in a manual project in preparation of the Day of the Dead celebrations. 

Many hanks also to the family that shared the snack so the kids could recharge their energies!
